acebook is great for connecting with others, but you probably don’t want to share all your news, photos, etc. with everyone you’re connected to on Facebook. Here’s a primer for Facebook beginners on organizing friends into lists for more control over what’s shared.

Facebook’s privacy settings can be confusing for even long-time Facebook users, so while this guide is part of our Emailable Tech Support series to help Lifehacker readers help new computer users, it may also be a good reminder for everyone on using Facebook’s friends lists.

Create Your Friends Lists

First, go to the Account menu in Facebook and click "Edit Friends". On the Friends page, click on the "+ Create a List" button at the top.

This will bring up the Create New List window shown at the top of this article, with all of your Facebook friends listed.

Hold down the CTRL key (or the Command key on Mac) to select each friend you want to add to a list. Some examples of lists you might want to create: Family, Work, High School, Neighbors…and so on. (Each friend can be on more than one list.)

Then click the "Create List" button to finish.

Do this for each of the lists you want to create.

Edit Your Friends

When you add a new Facebook friend, be sure to add him/her to each of your applicable lists, so your settings will apply to that friend in the future.

If you want to add a friend to a list or change what list(s) he/she is on after you’ve already set up your lists, go to the Account menu again and "Edit Friends". Beside each friend, you’ll see an "Edit Lists" drop-down. Click on that and select or de-select each of the lists the friend belongs on.

Once your lists are set up and your friends organized, you can:

Limit Who Can See Your Facebook Profile Information

If you only want certain people to be able to see your friends list and details about your education and work, hometown, and likes and activities, customize your privacy settings with the lists you just set up.

To set this up, go to the Account menu and click "Privacy Settings". Under the "Connecting on Facebook" heading, click the "View Settings Link".

Beside the information you want to make more private (e.g., your hometown), click the drop-down box and select "Customize".

In the next window, you have two choices: you can allow only certain people (or lists) to see that information or you can select who to hide the information from. (You can actually do both but that can be confusing.)

Most people may just want to use the hide feature—so you’re preventing certain groups from seeing your information. If, however, you have a list just for people you want to be able to see everything, you could use the first option instead.

Either way, to create the custom privacy setting, you’ll have to type in the name of the list to add it. For the first option, which makes the setting visible to only certain people, choose "Specific People…" from the drop-down then type in your list name. For the "Hide this from" option, just type in your list name(s). Then click "Save Setting".

Use Friends Lists to Adjust Your Sharing Settings

There are more privacy settings you can control with lists, such as who sees photos and videos you’re tagged in, as well as your contact information.

A very handy feature is the ability to set your status updates, photos, and posts to be shown only to specific lists (or excluded from specific lists) by default. This means every time you share something on Facebook it’ll only be visible to those chosen lists, unless you specify otherwise.

These settings are also under the Account > Privacy Settings page. Click on the "Customize" link at the bottom to start customizing your settings.

The process is the same as above (customizing your profile). Click the drop-down box beside each item, then "Customize" and type in the name of each list of friends you want to exclude or include in these shared items.

You can also specify which lists get to see individual posts, photos, links, etc. from you.

Beneath the status update box, there’s a padlock icon. Click on that and then the "Custom" setting to get the window you’re probably now familiar with: the one with the options to make the item visible to only certain people/lists or hide the item from specific people.

Facebook Chat and Photo Albums Privacy

To appear offline to certain lists, click on the Chat button at the bottom of your browser. Click on the slider button beside your friend list to appear offline to just those contacts. (Handy if you have a created a list of people who constantly interrupt you—remember, you can add people to more than one list.)

For your photo albums, just go into the album and click on the "Edit Album" link at the top. Then click on the privacy drop-down button to get to the window where you can show only or hide the album from specific lists.

Other Uses for Friends Lists

You can also use your lists to filter the updates you see on Facebook. Click on the "Most Recent" drop-down on your Facebook home page and you’ll see your friends lists—click on one to show only posts from those friends.

There may be many other areas where you can use the power of friend lists to customize who sees the information you share on Facebook. If you know of any or have additional Facebook friends list tips for us, please share them in the comments.

One of the dumbest ideas ever on Facebook is that friends can automatically add you to groups. I’m not sure why Facebook thinks that giving friends the power to add you to any group out there is a good idea, but the feature is there and it is actively used. So, if you ever wanted to create a I’m the Greatest group and invite all your friends to it, then this is your chance to do just that. Your friends will be automatically added to the new group, and it is up to them to either try and get out of the group again or participate in it.

It is not really clear why they are not sending out invitations instead, which would give every friend the choice to either join the new group or ignore the invite to not join the group.

It is apparently only possible to invite friends into new Facebook groups. If you visit an old group page on Facebook you will see the following paragraph at the top.

Over the next few months, Facebook will be archiving all groups created using the old groups format. When this group is archived, its wall posts, photos and discussion threads will move to the new groups format, but group members will need to be re-added.

The new Group page it links to offers little information about the new group concept on Facebook. It is only possible to automatically add friends to new groups on Facebook. The old concept was to send friends invitations if you wanted them to join a group on Facebook.

The new group concept is obviously flawed, considering that the majority of Facebook users are not only friends with their closest friends and relatives, but with many different users of the social networking site.

This may open the door for spam or even malicious attacks in form of phishing links or software downloads. It does not necessarily have to go that far, but being a member of a group that you do not want to be part of may be be reason enough to be against the new group concept.

How can you stop people from adding you to Facebook Groups automatically? The short answer is, you cannot. The only option you have is to leave the group and contact the friend to let them know that you do not want to be part of the group. If you get re-added, your only option is to leave again and / or remove the friend who has added you from the friend list.

Here is how you leave groups. Click on Groups on your Facebook profile page. The groups link is located near the top right corner of the page.

There you see a list of all groups that you are a member of. To leave a group, hover your mouse cursor over the group. A blue x is displayed next to the group. Click on the x to leave the group.

You will get a remove group membership confirmation prompt. Select Remove if you are sure and want to leave the selected group on Facebook.

Have you been added by friends to groups automatically? How have you handled this?

Many Ubuntu users have, in the last 24 hours, been experiencing bizarre crash issues with VoIP service Skype whereby the application randomly crashes then fails to start again.

Skype themselves have seemingly acknowledged there is a problem via twitter.

Skype’s not quite the same since Microsoft bought it, eh? Joking aside, reader Dipish was one of those affected: -

“Something weird happened today: at some time Skype crashed and wouldn’t launch again. Trying to launch it in terminal simply outputs ‘Aborted’ and nothing else. After some googling I discovered that not only I have this problem so I decided to share a tip for other users affected.

Some people suggested uninstalling Skype, and completely deleting the ~/.Skype dir before installing it again but there’s actually one file that’s somehow causing problems: shared.xml.”

So how to fix?

Deleting/renaming the file in question seems to get things running again:

mv ~/.Skype/shared.xml ~/.Skype/shared~.xml

After that one will need to re-enter Skype password upon login.

Macbook users experiencing sound problems with heir speakers in Ubuntu 11.04 may benefit from the following ‘fix’.

Adwait, of blog ‘thepirado’, wrote of a fix he found via the Ubuntu IRC channel.

Fixing low volume sound on a Macbook with Ubuntu 11.04

You need to add a new line to a system module configuration file. As poking around with system modules can be risky, make sure you only edit/enter the commands stated below.

Open a terminal (or ALT+f2) and enter the following command:

gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

In the text file that opens up add: -

options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55

to the bottom of the document. Hit save and close. Reboot Ubuntu and, providing this was the issue afflicting you, your sound should return to normal.

LED

Adwait was also experiencing issues with the speakers LED. He suggests adding: -

amixer set IEC958 off

to the file above to switch it off.

If you’ve ever yearned to mash up your cat video with some C-SPAN footage but couldn’t figure out how, today’s your lucky day.

Because starting now, YouTube is giving users a choice over how they want to license their content. There’s still the standard YouTube license, which is fairly restrictive, and now there’s a new option: Creative Commons (with attribution). In short, you can now give other people permission to use your footage however they’d like, provided to include a link back to the source.

Licenses are a tricky business (there are six different Creative Common licenses) but YouTube is hoping to reduce confusion by limiting users to one option, which requires attribution and does allow for content to be used for commercial purposes.

So, what does this mean for users? You’ll now be able to use YouTube’s video editor to splice your own video with content that has been uploaded by other users under Creative Commons, and they’ll be able to use your videos if you let them. Which means if your video could really use a shot of a waving flag, or a cat riding a Roomba, you’ll probably be able to add one in just a few clicks.

To start things off, YouTube has worked with content partners like C-SPAN and Al Jazeera to offer an initial batch of 10,000 videos under the CC license. That library will rapidly increase as more people switch their content over to Creative Commons, and there’s even a tool that will let you swap the license for a bunch of videos at once.

Whenever you watch a video on YouTube that includes CC content that was created by another user, an attribution link will automatically be placed beneath the video. This attribution is currently only shown if you hit the ‘more’ button on the video’s description, but YouTube says it will consider giving attribution links more placement if few people click them.

Firefox 4 is gaining in the global browser wars. It has eclipsed version 3.6 for the first time and now is the third most-used browser in the world, behind Internet Explorer 8 and Google Chrome 11, according to StatCounter Global.

If you put add all versions of all the browsers together, IE is still the global leader with 43.9%, of which 4.6% is IE 9. Firefox is second with 29.3%. Chrome has experienced the most growth, going from 8.6% in 2010 to 19.4% in 2011. Yet, given the different stats you see from different sources, the precise numbers in the browser market are hard to determine. See the charts below.

Firefox has added almost 10% to its global market share since 2008, when it broke the 20% barrier, according to Mozilla. We asked last year if Firefox was going to lose market share to Chrome. Based on the StatCounter Global statistics, that is not the case. Yet, if you look at NetMarketShare, Firefox only has 21.71% of the market (down from 24.59%) while Chrome has grown from 6.73% to 12.52%. See the opposing charts below.

StatCounter Global Data

In the U.S., IE has 47% of the market while Firefox weighs in at 15% and Chrome at 15%.

That would correlate with data we reported from Quantcast in February 2010 that said U.S. users are less likely to use Chrome or Firefox.

The StatCounter report says that Firefox version 4 has had considerable adoption since its release in March. That's impressive considering Firefox requires users to manually update browser versions whereas Chrome automatically updates and Microsoft prompts users to upgrade from IE 8 to IE 9 within Windows Vista and Windows 7.

StatCounter Global statistics are based on aggregate data collected on a sample of over 15 billion page views per month, 4 billion of which came from the U.S. The data is collected from the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites.

Google chrome is available for Windows, Linux based OS such as Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal) and Mac OS X. The most important thing about the Chrome is that – it’s popularity(as well as some features) has increased exponentially; it provides all the features and functionality that a modern browsers should provide. Google Chrome is one of the most popular web browser on this planet.

If you have just installed the Ubuntu 11.04, then you got Mozilla Firefox installed by default. Mozilla Firefox sucks on Ubuntu or any other Linux Distribution, but people(specifically web developers) still uses it due to some plugins like Firebug,PageSpeed , which were not available in other browser, but Now, most of them is available for Google Chrome. Google chrome has minimal designed interface, optimized for speed. Surfing (Experience) is fun (Fast, Secure), when you have Google Chrome. it has some advanced features like – Instant Loading (load the page as you type the URL in the Address bar), Pre DNS Fetching (Perform the DNS look up of the links on the loaded page, in the background) etc to boost the browsing speed.

Installing Google Chrome on Ubuntu 11.04

Google Chrome can be installed in many ways, on Ubuntu 11.04. Here I’ll explain few simple methods. You can also install Chromium (almost similar to Google Chrome), it is available in Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic Package Manager. Just follow the steps -

step #1 : Go to its official website and download the Debian Package. Google Chrome version 10.x.* is the latest one.

Download the Google Chrome for Ubuntu 11.04

step #2 : Open the saved file with Ubuntu Software Center (Right Click on the Package, then select Open With USC; click on install Button to proceed) or Use the dpkg command to install the package. To install from the command line, type the command given below and enter your login password to proceed.

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

step #3 : That’s all.. No more steps.. Enjoy surfing with Chrome.

GNOME Shell is now available in the official Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot repositories, along with most of the GNOME 3 applications (Gedit 3, Nautilus 3 Evolution and so on; some of them are available for quite some time – like Nautilus, while some were uploaded recently – like Gedit or Evolution).

Note for those who are not up to date with everything that's going on in Ubuntu: GNOME Shell is not and won't be installed by default in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. However, Ubuntu 11.10 will use GNOME 3 with Unity instead of GNOME Shell.

GNOME Shell 3 (3.0.1) was uploaded about three days ago and the GNOME 3 session finally arrived yesterday. Here's a screenshot featuring GNOME Shell running in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot:

(No, that's not the Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot default theme; I've used a different theme because Ambiance doesn't support GTK3 for now as you will see in some of the screenshots in this post)

After these updates, a "GNOME classic" session is available in the login screen, but it will probably be removed soon (because according to Mark Shuttleworth, there won't be a classic GNOME session in Ubuntu 11.10 – Unity 2D will be used as the fallback mode instead):

Another Unity screenshot, this time using a theme that supports GTK3:

Later update: AppMenu (Global Menu) with GTK3 support was uploaded a few minutes ago:

Important: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot is currently in very early development stages (it didn't even reach alpha 1!) so a lot of things will change. Also, the theme looks broken because Ambiance (the default Ubuntu theme) hasn't been ported GTK3 yet.
